Dehns and Venner Shipley

Dehns is a leading, top-tier ranked firm of European Patent and Trade Mark Attorneys.  We have a practical, commercially focused approach which helps us to turn your intellectual property into valuable commercial assets. We advise on and handle all aspects of patenting innovative technology, registering words, logos and other marks and registering original designs.

The majority of our clients are SMEs, ranging from independent inventors considering their intellectual property for the first time, to University academics, spin‑out companies and other start-ups.  Our attorneys have the experience and expertise to understand what is important to each client type and the flexibility to ensure that the service our clients receive is appropriate and relevant to them. We are particularly skilled in guiding SMEs to develop and grow a patent strategy to maximise their assets.

Due to our size and the breadth of technical expertise within the firm, we are able to handle cases in all areas of technology.   All of our patent attorneys have a degree in a relevant science or technology subject and within our large, specialist life sciences team, many also hold a Ph.D.

Our life sciences team has extensive expertise with a vast range of technologies, including innovations in the fields of medical, pharmaceutical and veterinary science, industrial biotechnology, agroscience, human and animal nutrition, cosmetics, microbiology, virology and research and analytical tools. For more information on our expertise please contact us or visit our webpage.

What sets us apart is that we combine our excellent scientific and legal expertise with a personal, tailored service.  We are consistently ranked as a top tier firm in prestigious guides such as Managing IP, Chambers, and The Legal 500.  Our clients praise us for combining "excellent legal knowledge with human qualities" and for "the knack for making hard cases simple."

How we can help
From deciding whether it is worth filing a patent application to managing and enforcing your patent portfolio, we can guide and assist you every step of the way.

We have extensive experience in helping SMEs to protect and exploit their IP and assess their freedom to operate in their chosen fields.  Our services include patent drafting, filing and prosecution, management of worldwide patent portfolios, as well as advising on patent related transactions and commercial strategy.

We also handle contentious matters, defending granted rights in opposition and appeal proceedings and advising on infringement of those patents; on the other side of the fence, we assess and advise on the impact of third party rights on our client’s activities.

We appreciate that, particularly in the life sciences sector, intellectual property can be one of the most valuable assets of a business, but that it can be difficult to find the funds for IP protection.  We therefore work hard to keep costs to a minimum.  For a special offer for LBIC clients, please refer to the next section.

We understand that sometimes time can be of essence and we pride ourselves in our ability to meet tight deadlines without compromising on quality.

Our offer to LBIC clients
You will always get clear, jargon-free advice from our friendly and highly knowledgeable experts.

Our offers to LBIC clients include the following:

1) Free initial meeting or consultation
Many of our new clients come to us via referrals, but if you have not heard of us before, we understand that you might want to get to know us before deciding that you would like to work with us. You may also have some initial queries about the patent system that we would be happy to clear up.

We are happy to meet with you face-to-face, or to have a chat on the telephone. This service is free, confidential, and places you under no obligation to engage us for any further services.

2) Free initial patentability assessment
We recognise the financial pressures that LBIC clients may be under, so to help you decide whether it is worth pursuing a patent, we offer a free initial patentability assessment.  This may involve the review of an invention disclosure and some key prior art to provide you with an informal opinion on whether it is worth pursuing patent protection for this invention.

This service is free, confidential, and places you under no obligation to engage us for any further services.

3) Dedicated attorney
The responsibility for your case will be allocated to an attorney having the appropriate technical specialism.  Thus, you will have a dedicated contact person who will be familiar with all aspects of your case.

4) Transparency and control of costs
We will work with you to make you aware of, and give you control over, potential costs and you will benefit from our preferential rates for SMEs.

5) Keeping you up-to-date
We are happy to provide free seminars on intellectual property (IP) related matters, for example to educate your workforce about the importance of IP, or to explain important developments in IP practice to you.
