MedCity Lab Providers Forum: Barcelona Insights for London’s Life Sciences Ecosystem

Barcelona Insights for London’s Life Sciences Ecosystem

Janette Richardson-Lee, Director of Operations, LBIC

Following my participation in the recent MedCity study visit to Barcelona, I was invited to contribute on a panel discussion at the MedCity Lab Providers Forum, reflecting on what London can both learn from, and continue to lead within, Europe’s life sciences landscape.

As part of the delegation, the three-day programme gave me an opportunity to interact with 15 high-growth SMEs from the Grow London Global (GLG) programme and for all of us to get a comprehensive view of Barcelona’s integrated ecosystem. Visits to hospitals, biotech research organisations and supercomputing centres exemplify the strength of alignment across their local ecosystem.

While the visit clearly demonstrated the effectiveness of Barcelona’s model, it also reinforced the significant strengths of London as a global life sciences hub. Alongside peers from Paddington Life Sciences, Populate, MedCity, and our discussions focused on our learnings and how London can build on its existing leadership position.

With my extensive experience in lab operations, the insights that stood out to me were:

  1. Ecosystem Cohesion

Unlocking greater collaboration while preserving existing specialisation and strengths. Barcelona provides a compelling example of the benefits of a highly coordinated, city-wide ecosystem. However, London’s strength lies in the depth and global reputation of its individual clusters, each of which operates at the forefront of science and innovation. The opportunity is not to replicate Barcelona, but to better connect these established centres of excellence.

  2. Strategic Positioning and a ‘Global’ Narrative

Barcelona’s success reflects a sustained and clearly articulated ‘global positioning strategy’. London already possesses world-leading clinical trials infrastructure, academic excellence, and research capability. The challenge is less about capability and more about consistency. As a long-term member of the London ecosystem, I see there is a real opportunity to present a more unified, confident narrative that fully reflects the scale and quality of what London offers internationally.

  3. Clinical Excellence and Commercial Integration

Barcelona’s ability to align research, clinical care, and business is a notable strength. Our discussions concluded that London already delivers at a world-class level across each of these domains independently. The opportunity is to further strengthen the interfaces between them with the goal of accelerating translation, improving access, and enhancing the pathway from discovery to commercialisation within an already highly advanced system.

Overall Reflections

This visit reinforced that London remains one of the world’s leading life sciences ecosystems, with unparalleled academic depth, clinical expertise, and global connectivity. At the same time, there is clear value in continuing to evolve how these strengths are coordinated, communicated, and leveraged collectively.

Rather than signalling a need for fundamental change, Barcelona’s model offers a useful benchmark by highlighting targeted opportunities to enhance cohesion, sharpen the narrative, and build even stronger links between research, healthcare, and industry.

Initiatives such as this play an important role in informing strategic thinking, strengthening international partnerships, and ensuring London not only remains competitive but continues to lead on the global stage.
