Anthony Walker - a partner in the bioscience consultancy firm Alacrita Consulting, has an extensive background in management consultancy and biotech startups.
How did Alacrita Consulting come about?
After a short time with ICI, I spent 10 years in management consultancy. Then I helped set up Onyvax, a cancer vaccine biotech company involved in various clinical and research programmes. After 10 years with Onyvax, I decided to move back into management consultancy and to apply my experience in a new life sciences consulting company, Alacrita.
What does Alacrita Consulting offer?
Alacrita offers a broad range of consultancy services from IP to finance. We have specialists in many fields such as clinical trials, business development, quality systems and manufacturing. We have a growing team of expertise-based consultants, who can manage all types of projects however specific or general. The whole package is offered, a genuine network of experienced professionals at a cost effective price.
You have an office at LBIC, how does this benefit you?
LBIC is a brilliant concept. I have great admiration for Professor Colin Howard and what he has done here. It is managed in a proficient and calm manner and you do not feel like your business is being intruded upon; importantly, support is still there if and when you need it.
What is your 5 year plan for Alacrita?
We already have several overseas clients. Our 5 year plan is to expand both nationally and internationally.
What is the most challenging aspect of starting a bioscience company?
Raising enough money. The UK is brilliant at discovering new technology but falls down when it comes to the resources to back it. Alacrita specialises in investment plans, marketing and risk assessment in order to help startup business get the backing they deserve.
What is the most satisfying part of your job?
Adding value to clients. We have to believe we can add value in the technology and the company in order to take on the project. Growing a company's reputation and the changing, yet challenging environment of my job is enjoyable.
