    MR. RICHARD BROOKS, BUSINESS PLANNING

    Richard co-founded FD Solutions (FDS) in the early 1990s. FDS employs, full time, 30 experienced finance directors who provide services on a flexible basis at over 140 businesses.

    Richard holds a number of finance director positions in his specialist sectors of technology, manufacturing and food. He is on the Finance Committee of the BioIndustry Association and represents FDS as part of the Business Support Network at the London BioScience Innovation Centre.

    During the last four years, Richard has been a presenter at Entrepreneurship for Scientists and Engineers in Italy, South Africa, Argentina and Jordan.

     

    TONY JONES, SECTOR OVERVIEW

    After completing a PhD in Biochemistry (1992) from the University of Southampton UK, Tony undertook several years of post-doctoral research in the oncology field, primarily with the Imperial Cancer Research Fund (now CRUK). In 1997, he moved into Technology Transfer with the Medical Research Council and later (1998) University College London, at the Wolfson Institute for Biomedical Research. In November 2003, Tony took up the post of Director of Biotechnology & Healthcare at London First, managing the London Biotechnology Network and promotion of London's excellence in healthcare research and delivery. In May 2010 he took London Biotechnology Network into the merger with ERBI, seeing this as the best manner in which to continue assisting member companies develop their businesses.

    As Director of Business Development his role at One Nucleus encompasses the development of the membership offer to reflect the current external environment and changing needs placed upon members' businesses. He leads on delivery of the BioWednesday events series and the annual Genesis Conference. As a member of the senior management team of One Nucleus, he remains integral to the content of our Cambridge-based events and the overall strategy of the company.

     

    STELLA COLLINS, SELLING YOURSELF AS WELL AS YOUR BUSINESS

    Stella Collins BSc, MSc, FITOL has a BSc in Psychology and an MSc in Human Communication and is a Fellow of the Institute of Training and Occupational Learning. Her business background includes 15 years in the IT industry and 11 years in L&D.

    Stella is director of Stellar Learning which specialises in developing business and leadership skills for scientists and technologists. Their Skills2Grow workshops have been popular with multinational organisations such as Astra Zeneca, Shell, BP as well as SMEs in the sector such as Prosonix, Oxford Catalysts, Polytherics and Stella works both nationally and internationally.

    She is also founder of the Brain Friendly Learning Group, an international network of professional trainers.

     

    DR. BARBARA DOMAYNE-HAYMAN, ENTREPRENEUR PANELIST

    Barbara is Chief Executive Officer of Stabilitech Limited, which she joined as CEO in October 2007. Previously she was Commercial Director at Arrow Therapeutics, an antiviral drug discovery and development company, for over four years, until the company was acquired by AstraZeneca in 2007.

    Prior to Arrow, Barbara was Senior Business Development Manager at Celltech, and previously held senior international commercial positions at Zeneca where she worked for over ten years.

    Barbara has also consulted in Life Sciences for Ernst & Young Strategy Group, and holds a Sloan Fellowship from London Business School. She has a BA and D.Phil in chemistry from the University of Oxford.

     

    DR. JIM GAZZARD, KEY FACILITATOR

    Jim is Senior Lecturer in Business, Enterprise and Innovation at the Royal Veterinary College; he is also Business Manager for its technology transfer team, RVC Enterprise.

    After postdoctoral research in Nottingham, Jim joined the Medical Research Council in 2000, serving as its Technology Transfer Manager and responsible for identifying, protecting, developing and commercialising its intellectual property.

    In 2005 he was a research fellow at Cranfield School of Management, investigating evidence-based management practices to improve team performance. There followed a move to GlaxoSmithKline in 2006 as a Principal Scientist with responsibility for developing technical and business skills in laboratory scientists.

    Jim holds a BSc in genetics (Cardiff, 1997), a PhD in the molecular genetics of hearing loss (Nottingham, 2000) and a MBA in Entrepreneurship and Business Venturing (Stirling, 2007).

     

    DR. ANTON HUTTER, INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY

    Anton Hutter (PhD CPA EPA ETMA) is a Chartered and European Patent Attorney specialising in biotechnology, especially molecular biology, pharmaceuticals and medical devices. Anton has gained considerable experience in handling all aspects of patent practice including patent drafting and prosecution. He also has significant experience of advising clients on patent infringement and validity, and providing due diligence opinions. Anton also enjoys complex opposition and appeal work, and regularly attends hearings at the European Patent Office in Munich. 

    Anton works for a broad spectrum of clients, and has extensive experience of working with academic institutions and associated technology transfer departments, university-derived spin-out companies, incubator-based companies, SMEs, as well as large multinational companies. He always strives to provide his clients with clear, commercially relevant advice.

    Anton regularly lectures on the patenting of bioscience inventions. During his career, Anton has also been involved in a wide range of UK and foreign trademark issues, and he is a European trademark attorney.

    MR. PETER JONES, MANAGING THE PEOPLE CHALLENGES

    Peter set up Manor Resources in 1989 as a consultancy specialising in HR services and change projects. He has worked across all sectors, public, private and charity, and advised leaders at all levels—from plc chief executives to start-up owner-managers.

    Peter has provided HR advice with venture capital firms and start-up owners in the bioscience areas, together with advice on leadership and team issues to ensure that people work together effectively.

     

    DR. KEN LARKIN, THE ROLE OF BIOINCUBATORS

    Ken is Chief Executive of The London BioScience Innovation Centre. He graduated from the University of Warwick with a B.Sc. Honours Degree in Biological Sciences, and went on to obtain a Ph.D. in eukaryotic genetics at the Institute of Food Research (IFR), Norwich Research Park.

    Ken conducted Post-Doctoral research at the Institute of Genetics, University of Nottingham where he was part of a research team studying the genetic and molecular basis of an inherited form of Muscular Dystrophy.

    Prior to joining LBIC in 2009, Ken worked for eight years at the East Midlands Development Agency (EMDA) where he gained valuable experience in economic development and international investment as well as an in-depth knowledge of the global healthcare market.

     

    MISS PATRICIA LATTER,
    TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER

    Patricia has been Head of Business Development at Royal Veterinary College since 2002, leading the team responsible for developing all aspects of the College's commercial interactions. In addition, she is Deputy Director and Company Secretary of the London BioScience Innovation Centre – the bio-incubator owned by the College.

    Patricia has worked in technology transfer in the biosciences from academia to industry for nearly twenty years – originally at Imperial Cancer Research Fund, followed by a short time at British Technology Group, focusing there on marketing for the pharmaceutical group. She then joined Royal Postgraduate Medical School, managing consultancy; clinical trials; research collaborations; and technology licensing. In 1997, RPMS merged to become part of Imperial College. Patricia subsequently became Head of the Medical Sciences Team of the merged technology transfer companies – IC Innovations Limited, which concentrated activities in spin-out creation.

    Patricia has a BSc in Biochemistry and previously worked in research administration, scientific public relations and marketing.

     

     
    DR. TONG LEUNG, CONTRACTS & RESEARCH COLLBORATION

    Tong finished his PhD in Reproductive Physiology at the Royal Veterinary College in the 1990s and carried out post-doctoral positions in assay development.

    With personal interests in commercial activities, Tong completed a MSc Investment and Finance, and then joined the RVC Enterprise team in 2003. Since then, Tong has been responsible for implementing enterprise skills training courses for students and staff, carrying out commercial assessments for new invention and business opportunities, managing IP portfolios and acting as contract manager.

    Tong has a strong interest in financial investment activities, and extensive experience in contract management and technology transfer.

     

     
    MR. DAVID McMEEKIN, ACCESSING FINANCE FOR BIOTECH START-UPS

    David is Chairman of Company Guides Venture Partners, which manages the London Technology Fund. He has over 30 years experience in corporate finance and investment, encompassing stockbroking and banking, quoted and unquoted companies, venture capital, M&A and flotations. He was also founder chairman of the largest of the government's Regional Venture Capital Funds, the £50m Regional Venture Capital Fund for London (The Capital Fund), from which he retired in October 2008 following its acquisition. The Capital Fund has made over 100 investments in more than 70 companies.

    David was previously head of corporate finance at HSBC/Midland Bank, having been asked to join the bank on secondment from its stockbroking arm to establish and lead a corporate finance department. Whilst at HSBC he established and chaired an in-house venture capital fund and helped to establish 11 regional venture capital funds on behalf of the Finance for Enterprise initiative by the Prince of Wales.

    Prior to joining the bank, David was head of corporate finance at the stockbroking firm, Greenwell Montagu. He also has direct experience of industry, having started his career with ICI and been chairman of quoted and unquoted companies. He has been invited to serve as a member of various committees, including the Financial Services Panel of the Office of Science and Technology's Foresight Programme.

     

    NIGEL SPENCER, ACCESSING MARKET RESEARCH AND INFORMATION RESOURCES

    Nigel is currently responsible for the development of innovative new services designed to meet the needs of entrepreneurs, through the British Library's Business & IP Centre.

    Since joining the BL in 1983, Nigel has been responsible for managing a diverse range of services. These have included the BL Lloyds Bank Business Line; the BL seminar programme; reprographic and photographic services; the Patent Express document delivery service; the BL Images online picture library; reference services across all BL reading rooms, and; the provision of access to premium subscription online databases in BL reading rooms. In 2009, he led the JISC-funded 'Business Information Resources Landscape and Feasibility Study' and is leading the BL contribution to the Interreg IVB NWE project: 'Inspiring Open Innovation'.

     

     
    ROB JOHNSON, ENTREPRENEUR PANELIST

    Rob is a co-founder and Partner at Alacrita, a management consultancy specialising in the life sciences. Prior to forming Alacrita, Rob was Head of Business Development at Onyvax Ltd, a biotechnology company specialising in the development of complex biopharmaceuticals to treat cancer. At Onyvax he supported scientific groups with and the identification, negotiation and management of R&D collaborations and out-sourcing contracts and had primary responsibility for in-licensing, out-licensing and M&A.

    At Alacrita, Rob has led and managed a number of consulting projects across broad functional disciplines, including regulatory affairs, clinical development and business development.

    Rob Johnson has a BSc in biochemistry from the University of Nottingham.

     

    DEBORAH COCKERILL, SMART MARKETING

    Deborah has a broad foundation in Life Science having studied Biology at University College, London.

    Specifically, Deborah has extensive experience in website development, web marketing and online advertising having worked at BioMedNet, ChemWeb and BioMed Central.

    Deborah then went on to launch De Facto Digital, the online department of De Facto Communications, working with clients such as Nikon, Aesthera Laser, BioFocus DPI and Synergy Outsourcing.

    With the knowledge and experience gained in internet publishing and within the agency world, Deborah now runs Sciad to focus on maximising the communications reach for companies online

     

    SEAN WARD, ENTREPRENEUR PANELIST

    Sean Ward is Chief Executive Officer of Synthace Limited, an applied synthetic biology spinout from UCL, which he co-founded in 2011. Prior to Synthace, Sean was a Research Associate in Bioinformatics at University College London, where he conducted research into protein folding, protein structure prediction, and gene coding.

    Before his work in bioinformatics, Sean was the co-founder and Chief Technology Officer for Relatable, a leading US based acoustic fingerprinting and music recommendation company, who's customers included major peer to peer companies such as Napster, as well as consumer electronics, royalty collection agencies, and major labels. Sean has a BSc in Computer Science from University College London.

     

     

    EMMA PALMER FOSTER, OPEN INNOVATION

    Emma Palmer Foster is Strategic Communications Consultant at Stevenage Bioscience Catalyst.

    Stevenage Bioscience Catalyst is the UK's first open innovation bioscience campus, pioneering a unique culture to drive early stage drug discovery and development. It is backed by £38m of funding from its founding partners – GlaxoSmithKline, the Wellcome Trust, the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, the Technology Strategy Board and the East of England Development Agency (www.stevenagecatalyst.com).

    Emma Palmer Foster is a consultant with almost 20 years' experience in the European pharmaceutical and biotechnology sector. She established EJ Palmer Consulting in 2007, following roles in investment banking, financial communications and investor relations, journalism and technology transfer. EJ Palmer Consulting advises companies on corporate and financial strategy, IR and communications (www.ejpalmerconsulting.com).

    Emma has an MA in Biochemistry from the University of Oxford and an MBA from the University of Durham. She is a Trustee of the mental health charity MPF Counselling, a Visiting Fellow at Durham Business School, a member of the UK Investor Relations Society and the Chartered Institute of Public Relations, and sits on the UK NIHR i4i Late-Stage Panel.

     

    JACKIE HUNTER, OPEN INNOVATION

    Jackie Hunter has worked in the pharmaceutical industry for over 25 years and has a track record of innovation in drug discovery and development, most recently as the SVP and Head of the Neurology and GI Centre of Excellence for Drug Discovery (CEDD) for GlaxoSmithKline.  She established an open innovation externalisation strategy for GSK R&D and led the creation of the world's first open innovation pharmaceutical campus at GSK's laboratories in Stevenage UK, raising over £25M in external funding.

    In 2010, she left GSK and launched OI Pharma Partners Ltd., concentrating on open innovation in bioscience utilising her knowledge and those of her associates in open innovation and the cultural and commercial challenges of externalisation and collaboration.  She is a non-exec director of Proximagen Group Ltd and a member of the governing council of Royal Holloway College, University of London.

    She has received several awards including Woman of Outstanding Achievement in Science, Engineering and Technology for her contribution to innovation and entrepreneurship and the CBE for her services to the pharmaceutical industry.

     

    NEILL MACKENZIE, ENTREPRENEUR PANELIST

    Neill is an internationally networked pharmaceutical executive with an extensive operational, commercial, licensing and R&D background in a range of therapeutic areas. His R&D experience spans nineteen years, following a PhD in immunology and post‐doctoral work at the National Institute for Medical Research with the MRC, he became a lecturer in the University of London, and then Head of Immunology and Bacteriology Department in Wellcome plc and subsequently Mallinckrot Inc. Over the last seventeen years, he has been a Board Member of CMP Therapeutics Ltd , and Roji Ltd as CEO , Medigene Ag as Executive Vice President for Business Development and Corporate Strategy, Avidex Ltd (now Immunocore) as CBO, Oxford BioMedica plc, Oxford BioMedica (UK) Ltd and BioMedica Inc, as Executive Vice president for Business Development, and Cambridge Genetics Ltd as CEO. As an Executive Director with P&L responsibilities, in both listed (both the full London Stock Exchange (LSE) and the Alternative Investment Market) and private companies, he has raised over $150 million equity capital from private and public funds and completed numerous deals with pharmaceutical and biotech companies globally. Currently, as CEO, taking full operational responsibility for CMP Therapeutics Ltd and Roji Ltd, two virtual companies based in the UK.

     

    Dr Gayle Chapman - Managing your Knowledge and Projects

    Gayle Chapman is a director and partner at Catalyst Consulting. This Cambridge based consultancy support biotech, pharma and academic alliances to accelerate research projects,  deliver therapeutic molecules to the clinic and release project value faster.

    Between 2007 and 2011 Gayle was a project and portfolio manager at Medimmune playing a key role in the development of a team of specialised project managers/strategists whilst personally providing effective leadership of >15 complex global teams delivering milestones through all phases up to candidate drug.

    Gayle is a life science professional with 14 years experience leading new technology projects as well as more traditional small and large molecule research projects in Biotech (CAT, UCB/Celltech) and Pharma (GSK, AZ, Medimmune).

    Gayle holds a BSc in Biochemistry and a PhD in the molecular mechanisms of Alzheimer's disease (1994, 1997, University of Wales, Cardiff).

     

    Caroline Broad - Managing your Knowledge and Projects

    After spending five years in Knowledge and Information Management with Medimmune (owned by AZ), formally Cambridge Antibody Technology, Caroline took the plunge and went entrepreneurial.  One year ago Caroline set up Catalyst Consulting with Dr Gayle Chapman.  Their objective is to drive efficiency to deliver projects earlier and with greater success.

    Caroline's background is in business analysis and facilitation, plus training in communication and team effectiveness.  For three years Caroline worked for an educational charity, managing and tutoring on transferable skills courses – the UK Grad programme and Vitaes 'Leadership in Action' for post graduates. 

    Before that Caroline gained her business acumen by working in a number of different sectors and now brings all that knowledge to the bio-science sector.  Caroline's degree is a BA (hons) in Philosophy from Wolverhampton University and she remains philosophical about most things.
